7+ 11+

THE 7+

We used to be unwilling to start tuition with children below seven but in the last two years we have received unprecedented requests for support with school admissions at 7+ for academic independent schools with a senior school in London.

As the competition for senior school places continues to intensify, more families are looking at 7+ entry, particularly for very popular London schools. Once a child is in the school, they still need to work hard and meet the school’s required standards, and may still be examined at 11+, but they often have a less difficult transition into the senior school than those applying from the outside. This approach from parents means that the competition at 7+ is becoming increasingly ferocious.

We always recommend an Academic Assessment prior to starting tuition for any 7+ examination to ensure your child’s suitability for target schools.  It’s important to check that a family’s 7+ goals are realistic to prevent unnecessary pressure being placed on very young children.  The 7+ may not be an appropriate option for your child or in fact, they may be doing well and not need tuition.  You can be sure that our advice will be education led and backed up with evidence from our bespoke assessments.

As children sitting the 7+ have to sit still and work on a Mathematics and English paper and potentially verbal and non verbal reasoning papers (depending on the school of choice), it is illuminating to see how children aged six and seven can cope with an Academic Assessment of the same length, difficulty and format.  Our assessments are designed to mirror what children will face in real exams and are constantly updated by qualified and practicing teachers.

Our 7+ tutors are qualified primary teachers and are used to working with younger children.  They have the expertise and experience to vary the pace of an hour’s targeted work and keep lessons fun and engaging.

THE 11+

London Home Tutors has over 30 years’ track record supporting students with entrance tests to the best London schools. For many years our tutors have successfully supported students with pre-tests, entrance exams and interviews at the UK’s most competitive schools including Westminster School, St Paul’s School, St Paul’s Girls’ School, The Latymer School, Highgate School, Channing School, University College School, King’s College School, James Allen’s Girls’ School, Alleyn’s school, Wimbledon High School, Dulwich College, Merchant Taylors’ School, Dame Alice Owen’s School and Henrietta Barnet School and North London Collegiate School.

London Home Tutors are able to provide experienced 11+ tutors who have direct insight and experience into the demands of the assessment process at these schools. We try to match families with tutors who have first hand tuition experience of the specific schools for which you are aiming and have a demonstrable track record of success.

We always recommend an Academic Assessment prior to starting an 11+ campaign as this will inform your whole plan with valuable insights.

You will receive real data on your child’s performance as a snap shot on the day of the assessment (from Mathematics and English papers) and also in respect of their academic potential (from Verbal and Non Verbal papers).  We can discuss appropriate London schools with you and will already have detailed information on learning gaps to the 11+ standard so that tuition can begin in the most targeted way.

Ideally 11+ tuition begins at the end of Year 4 or the beginning of Year 5.  Once your tutor has a baseline assessment of your child they will work together with you to create a comprehensive plan to build on your child’s strengths and plug any educational gaps.  As tuition progresses, your tutor will introduce past papers and practice papers to develop your child’s ability to work to time and under more formal conditions.  Your tutor will also introduce exam techniques and guidance for your child on how to perform to the best of their ability on the day.

11+ Workshops

To support our families in the stressful run up to their school entrance exams we run workshops aimed at boosting the key skills needed for success.  During the workshop pupils are taught Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and English and the level is aimed at students in Years 4 and 5. Forty five minutes is dedicated at the end of the programme for exam technique and this reflects the latest information we have on the current testing regimes at key schools.

London Home Tutors Workshops are taught by William MacMahon a qualified teacher with twenty five years’ experience in London class rooms.

William is now a school entrance specialist with a peerless track record of success for schools such as Westminster Upper, St Paul’s School, JAGS, Alleyn’s, Wimbledon High School, Putney High School and King’s College School Wimbledon.

Workshops take place on Saturday afternoons, usually from 2-5pm and are based at St Mary’s Church Hall in Putney.  The cost of the workshop is £299.

Pupils will take away from the workshop a booklet containing further work for them to complete and many useful suggestions for a successful 11+ campaign.

Please do get in touch if you would like to book a place on one of our workshops and we can let you know our available dates.  Places are limited to six children so that each child gets ample attention and support from William.

Please call us or get in touch via our website if you have any other questions. We look forward to hearing from you.
